Signs That May Mean Your Roof Was Damaged by Hail

Hail DamageSome of the most easy-to-spot signs that can indicate that your roof was damaged by hail include:

  • Dents in your shingles
  • Cracked or broken shingles or roof tiles
  • Pieces of shingles or roof tiles in your gutters or your yard
  • “Bald spots” on your shingles

Here’s a closer look at each.

Dents in Your Shingles

Dents in your shingles are a tell-tale sign that your roof has been damaged by hail. Some dents are very minor and don’t impact your shingles’ ability to protect your home – but if they’re large enough to capture pools of water, or if they were impacted hard enough to knock off shingle granules, they can pose a threat to your roof’s integrity.

Cracked or Broken Shingles or Roof Tiles

Texas hail can be softball-sized – and it can cause significant damage to your roofing materials. Impacts can be so severe that they crack and break the sturdiest shingles and roof tiles.

Your shingles or roof tiles are your roof’s first line of defense against the elements, so if they’re damaged or broken, you need to have them repaired or replaced right away so that water doesn’t find an easy pathway into your roofing materials.

Pieces of Shingles or Roof Tiles in Your Gutters or Your Yard

Even if you can’t see cracks or broken roofing materials from the ground, you may find debris from them in your gutters or elsewhere in your yard. A strong hail storm can affect any exposed area of your roof – even the spots out of view – so it’s important to call a professional roofing company for a free inspection after a storm. That way, you can make repairs before the damage spirals out of control.

Bald Spots on Your Shingles

Over time, all shingles begin to develop “bald spots.” However, they can occur after a hail storm, as well – impact from hail can knock off the small granules on the top of a shingle, which are there to help your roof shed water and remain water-tight. When shingles are missing granules, they can’t reflect light, shed water or protect your home as efficiently as they once could. If you notice bald spots on your shingles, or if you find granules in your gutters, near your downspouts, or on the ground beneath your roof’s overhang, it’s a sign that you should call a professional who can determine the extent of the damage.

Signs That May Mean Your Roof Was Damaged by Winds and Stormy Conditions

High winds and heavy rains can do a number on your roofing materials. Here are the most common signs that your roof has been damaged by one of the other:

  • Missing shingles
  • Loose debris on your roof or around your home
  • Clogged or broken gutters and downspouts
  • Damage to your roof supports or accents
  • Moisture in your attic

Here’s a closer look at each.

Missing Shingles

High winds can blow shingles or roof tiles right off your roof – and if that happens, you need to repair the damage immediately. Shingles and tiles are there to protect your roofing materials (such as underlayment and framing) from the elements (and pests). If they’re not there to do the job, your roof could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Older roofs are naturally more susceptible to losing shingles or tiles during a storm, but unfortunately, it can happen on any roof, particularly with a violent storm.

Loose Debris on Your Roof or Around Your Home

If you see tree branches on your roof or in your yard – or any other debris that doesn’t belong there – your roof may be damaged. Sometimes, even when there’s no visible debris, trees can damage your roof; if you have a tree close to your house, its branches can (and in many cases, do) be whipped around by high winds and rub up against your roofing materials.

Although minor and occasional brushes with branches shouldn’t do too much harm, it’s definitely worth having your roof checked by a professional (and pruning your tree) after a storm.

Clogged or Broken Gutters and Downspouts

Clogged gutters can pose significant hazards to your roof. That’s because clogs often cause water to pool up and sit against the fascia (the boards facing outward beneath your roof’s overhang). Water and wood aren’t a great combination. If you see peeling or blistering paint on your fascia, or if you see water damage marks or mold growth, you should have a professional check your gutters and roofing materials to make sure the wood isn’t so damaged that it’s become weak.

Likewise, if your gutters are broken, they can’t carry water away from your foundation like they’re supposed to. You may notice soil erosion beneath your roof’s overhang, which is a sign that the ground butting up to your foundation may be soaking up more moisture than it should.

Damage to Your Roof Supports or Accents

It’s a good idea to check your chimney, skylights and vents after a storm to ensure that they don’t appear to be damaged. If you can see it from the ground, look at the flashing (the sealing material that blocks out water where accents protrude from your roof) to make sure it’s still in place and appears undamaged. If your flashing is damaged, water may be able to get into your roofing materials, and that’s something you want to avoid at all costs.

Moisture in Your Attic

Moisture in your attic is a sign that there’s a leak in your roof or that your roof ventilation system isn’t working properly. Check your attic for:

  • Visible water, which may drip down the rafters
  • Signs of past water damage, such as discoloration on the wood
  • Mold or mildew growth
  • A musty odor, which can indicate that there’s mold or mildew growing where you can’t see it

If you see any sign of water in your attic, you need to call a roofing expert immediately. Leaks never get better with time, and they can become exponentially worse very quickly. The sooner you repair roof leaks, the better off you’ll be.
