TPO Roofing

Is TPO roofing the right solution for your commercial building? Here’s what you need to know about this single-ply membrane roofing material.

What Is TPO Roofing?

If you’re looking for UV-resistant, heat-resistant and economical for your commercial building, TPO may be the answer. Here’s what you need to know.

In many cases, you’ll see TPO roofing on large commercial facilities. It’s a single-ply membrane roofing material that provides ample protection against the elements. It’s a synthetic material (TPO stands for thermoplastic polyolefin), and it’s an incredibly versatile, durable roofing material that may be right for your building.

TPO can be ballasted, chemically adhered or mechanically fastened to insulation. Usually, TPO membranes are made in sheets; rolled sheets are installed directly on rooftops. Because TPO features a naturally reflective surface, this roofing material is found on about 40 percent of all commercial roofs. It’s the “go-to” for commercial buildings, manufacturing facilities and industrial buildings all over the country.

Benefits of TPO Roofing

TPO roofing offers several benefits, including Class A fire rating when treated with fire-retardant chemicals and its high reflectivity. Other benefits to choosing TPO roofing include:

  • Versatile looks
  • Durability
  • Ease of installation
  • Economical
  • Energy efficiency

Benefits of TPO Roofing Continued

Versatile Looks

TPO is not always white, although that is pretty common. It is also available in light gray and black – both of which have great reflective qualities that bounce the sun’s rays right back into the environment rather than absorbing them.

Ease of Installation

Because TPO is lightweight – far lighter than many other commercial roofing materials – it’s simpler to install. The sheets it comes in are generally very wide (usually 10, 20 or 30 feet), which means you’ll have fewer seams on your roof. Many people choose TPO because it helps them save on installation costs.

Energy Efficiency

TPO’s white reflective surface exceeds ENERGY STAR® requirements, and other colors are listed with the Cool Roof Rating Council. These types of roofs help reduce air conditioning loads and reduce your company’s carbon footprint.

Economical

TPO is a cost-effective way to protect your building. It offers many of the same benefits that PVC roofing does (including hot-air weldable seams), but it costs less. Additional savings are possible because of TPO’s energy efficiency, as well – it helps reflect sunlight rather than absorbing it, which typically translates into lower utility bills.

Durability

Ideal for new construction and replacement roofs, TPO is exceptionally durable. It resists mold growth and dirt accumulation, and it’s tear- and puncture-resistant, too. Because it’s so flexible, it allows for a building to “settle,” which inevitably happens over time.

How Much Does TPO Roofing Cost?

How much your TPO roof will cost depends on several factors, including:

  • The size of the roof
  • The existing roof’s condition
  • Your choice of insulation
  • Your choice of membranes
  • Roof penetrations that roofers must work around
